Large 4: open and European
A ~1-trillion-parameter open-weight model gives EU companies a self-hostable alternative for sensitive data.
Europe's model champion, backed by nuclear power
Mistral's €3B Series D (Samsung among the leads) and $830M of debt for its own GPUs south of Paris make France the only EU country with a full-stack AI champion. The lab released Large 4, a ~1-trillion-parameter open-weight model, though benchmarks still place it well below the US frontier. Low-carbon nuclear power and the €109B private investment pledge of 2025 make France the EU's most credible place for large AI campuses.

€3B of fresh equity plus debt-financed GPUs: Mistral is becoming infrastructure, not just a model vendor.
If data residency matters to you, add Mistral to every model shortlist and test it on your own tasks — and negotiate EU-hosted deployment from US vendors too.

Europe's flagship lab promises downloadable weights by the end of October, a 1M-token context and aggressive API pricing. A credible EU-trained alternative matters for data-sovereignty buyers.
The Series D, with Samsung among the leads, nearly doubles last year's €11.7B valuation. Europe now has a funded frontier lab with its own data centres — a real option for data-residency-sensitive buyers.
Its first debt financing pays for hardware at Bruyères-le-Châtel, run by Eclairion. Mistral aims for 200 MW of capacity across Europe by the end of 2027.
The Digital Omnibus deal also adds a ban on AI 'nudifiers'. Transparency duties (chatbot disclosure, labelling) largely keep their dates — don't relax on those.
